When a Joint Sponsor Can Help on Form I-864
When a Joint Sponsor Can Help on Form I-864
If the petitioning sponsor does not meet the required income level, a joint sponsor may help keep a family-based green card case moving.
Who can be a joint sponsor
A joint sponsor must generally be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, at least 18, and domiciled in the United States. The joint sponsor signs a separate Form I-864 and accepts a real financial obligation.
What evidence matters
Tax returns, W-2s, recent pay statements, and proof of current employment are usually central. Household size must be counted carefully because income sufficiency depends on that calculation.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not assume one strong salary fixes every problem. If income is inconsistent, outdated, or unsupported by documents, USCIS may still question the affidavit package.
