When can I apply for U.S. citizenship?

Last reviewed: January 15, 2025

Most green card holders can apply after five years, or after three years if married to a U.S. citizen and meeting all rules. Time outside the U.S. can affect eligibility.

You must meet continuous residence, physical presence, and good moral character requirements.

Miscounting time abroad or assuming a prior arrest does not matter can lead to denial.

Check your travel history and request certified court records if needed.
