Do I need to speak English to become a U.S. citizen?

Last reviewed: January 15, 2025

Most applicants must show basic English ability, but age and time as a resident can create exceptions. Medical waivers may also apply.

You may still need to take the civics test even if you qualify for an English exception.

Assuming a waiver is automatic without medical documentation can cause issues.

Confirm eligibility for exceptions and prepare with an interpreter if allowed.
