Missing Documents at a Consular Interview: How to Respond to 221(g)

A 221(g) notice after a consular interview often means the visa cannot be issued until the applicant provides missing documents, additional evidence, or information needed for administrative processing. It is not always a final denial, but it should be handled carefully.

The first step is to read the notice line by line. It may request civil documents, translations, police certificates, financial support evidence, medical results, proof of relationship, court records, prior immigration records, or passport photos. The notice may also specify whether documents should be uploaded, emailed, mailed, or brought to a follow-up appointment.

Applicants should respond with organized, complete evidence and keep proof of submission. Sending partial documents, unclear scans, expired police certificates, or inconsistent financial records can extend the delay. If the request involves inadmissibility, prior removal, criminal history, or suspected misrepresentation, legal review is especially important before responding.

New Horizons Legal helps families prepare 221(g) responses, update NVC or consular documents, and decide whether a waiver, corrected record, or escalation strategy is needed.

Immigration consultations available, subject to attorney review.
