N-470 Preserve Residence for Naturalization: Who Should File Before Working Abroad?
Permanent residents who accept long-term work outside the United States can accidentally damage the continuous residence needed for naturalization. Form N-470 may help certain applicants preserve residence for citizenship purposes, but it is not a general travel permission document.
The strongest candidates usually have qualifying employment, a clear U.S. residence history, and a plan to maintain permanent resident ties while abroad. N-470 does not erase every travel risk, and it does not replace a reentry permit when a green card holder expects a long absence.
Timing is critical. Applicants should review whether they meet the required period of physical presence as a permanent resident before the overseas assignment and whether the employer or work category qualifies. Filing late can make a strong case much harder.
Before leaving, organize tax records, employment letters, housing ties, travel dates, and proof of U.S. family or financial connections. New Horizons Legal helps permanent residents evaluate whether N-470 fits their citizenship strategy before an extended assignment begins.
