USCIS Service Request for a Case Outside Normal Processing Time

USCIS Service Request for a Case Outside Normal Processing Time

A USCIS service request is a formal inquiry asking the agency to review a specific problem, such as a case outside normal processing time, a missing notice, a typographic error, or non-delivery of a document. For delay inquiries, the case usually must be beyond the time shown on the USCIS processing times tool.

Before submitting a request, gather the receipt notice, filing date, form type, service center or field office, prior USCIS correspondence, and address history. If the case has an urgent issue, such as loss of work authorization or a medical emergency, an expedite request may be a separate strategy and should be supported with documents.

Repeated service requests with no new information rarely solve the underlying problem. If USCIS gives a vague answer, does not respond, or the delay is extreme, other options may include congressional inquiry, Ombudsman assistance, or litigation review.

New Horizons Legal helps clients evaluate USCIS delays, prepare service requests, preserve proof of follow-up, and decide when a stronger escalation strategy is justified.
