F-1 Reduced Course Load: Medical, Academic, and Final-Term Rules

F-1 students are generally required to maintain a full course of study. A reduced course load, often called an RCL, is a limited exception that must be authorized through the school's designated school official before the student drops below full time.

Common RCL reasons include certain academic difficulties, a documented medical condition, or a final term when fewer credits are needed to graduate. The rules and evidence differ by category. For medical RCL, the student usually needs documentation from a qualified medical professional and must keep the DSO updated.

Dropping classes first and asking later can create serious problems, including SEVIS termination, unlawful presence questions, loss of employment eligibility, and difficulty transferring schools or changing status. Students should also understand how an RCL may affect CPT, OPT timing, scholarships, housing, and health insurance.

New Horizons Legal helps F-1 students review status risks, coordinate with DSO procedures, prepare reinstatement options when needed, and protect future immigration plans before a course load change becomes a status violation.

Immigration consultations available, subject to attorney review.
