STEM OPT Form I-983 Changes: When to Update Your DSO

STEM OPT Form I-983 Changes: When to Update Your DSO

The STEM OPT extension depends on a real training plan between the student and employer. Form I-983 should match the job, worksite, compensation, hours, supervision, and training goals. If those facts change, the student may need to update the DSO and provide a revised training plan.

Common changes include a new worksite, different supervisor, major duty changes, reduced hours, compensation changes, employer restructuring, or a change that makes the training plan inaccurate. Students should also track required evaluations and employer reporting obligations.

Waiting until an RFE, site visit, H-1B filing, or future green card case can make the record look inconsistent. STEM OPT documentation should show that the student maintained status and that the employment remained tied to the degree and approved training plan.

New Horizons Legal helps students and employers review STEM OPT changes, prepare corrected I-983 documentation, and reduce immigration risk before small reporting issues become larger status problems.

Immigration consultations available, subject to attorney review.
