F-1 SEVIS Transfer Release Date: Why Timing Matters

An F-1 student who changes schools usually needs a SEVIS transfer. The release date is the date the current school releases the SEVIS record so the new school can issue a transfer-pending I-20. Choosing that date without planning can affect travel, employment, registration, and status.

Students should coordinate with both DSOs before the release date is set. The current school may need proof of admission, and the new school may need financial documents and transfer instructions. Once the release date passes, the old school usually cannot make normal updates to the SEVIS record.

Timing is especially important for students on OPT, students traveling internationally, and students close to a grace period or program start deadline. A gap, mistaken release date, or failure to report to the new school can create avoidable status questions.
