Can I work while my asylum case is pending?

Last reviewed: January 15, 2025

You may apply for work authorization after 150 days with a pending asylum application. You can only work once the card is approved and in hand.

The clock starts when USCIS accepts a properly filed I-589 and pauses if you request delays.

Filing too early or missing required documents can lead to rejection or a reset of the timeline.

Prepare your I-765 package and plan for processing time before starting a new job.
